CoM East Journalists’ Selective Contest Announcement

The Covenant of Mayors East (CoM East) project launches the selective contest for journalists from Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries to take part in the media workshop. The CoM East invites journalists to submit their articles/news stories originally developed for this contest on energy efficiency, climate change mitigation and adaptation, new EU2030 targets, and other Covenant-related topics by October 30, 2017. The rules of the selective contest can be found below.

Based on submitted entries, 25 journalists representing print, on-line and radio/TV from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia and Moldova (5 from each country) and 25 journalists from Ukraine will be selected and receive sponsored participation in the Covenant of Mayors media workshop. The results of the contest will be announced on November 6, 2017 on the CoM East website and Facebook page.

The media workshop is aimed at enhancing capacities and improving knowledge of the selected journalists about the EU global initiative and new Covenant, providing them with the clear and profound information about the climate change mitigation and adaptation measures, CO2 reduction and energy efficiency enhancement as well as the CoM East implementation in EaP countries, which will enable to deliver with high level of accuracy and clarity the Covenant-related topics to the general public and targeted audiences. The 2-day media workshop will take place in November 2017 in Ukraine – for national and regional journalists from Ukraine, and in Moldova – for the journalists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia and Moldova.

Background information:

The Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy brings together hundreds of local and regional authorities in the Eastern Partnership countries voluntarily committed to implementing EU climate and energy objectives on their territory. New Signatories now pledge to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 30% by 2030 and to adopt an integrated approach to tackling mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

CoM East, the EU-funded project, as a part of the EU Covenant of Mayors for Energy and Climate is aimed at introducing the EU flagship initiative to the Eastern Partnership countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. CoM East supports local authorities in implementing sustainable energy policies, reducing their dependency on fossil fuels, improving the security of energy supply, and facilitates their contribution to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

As of August 2017, out of 296 cities in EaP countries that joined the Covenant of Mayors, 98 have committed to the new 2030 objectives by implementing the EU climate and energy policies.

One of the main tasks of the CoM East project is to promote the new Covenant in the EaP countries and illustrate the benefits for the citizens living in the Signatory cities.
