From the ancient times, Kajaran is a testimony to the pagan temple of Gandzasar, the pagan temple of the 1950s, the foundations of the city, the foundations of the foundry, and the ore extraction. They prove that they had copper in the Kajaran area still in the Bronze Age.
The city's territory was part of the historic province of Dzorqun in the province of Syunik.
After the collapse of the state of Arshakuni (428), all the Zangezur was merged with Iran, at the end of the seventh century the Arabs occupied the IX-X centuries in the Kingdom of Bagratuni, and in the X-XI century as an independent Syunik kingdom.
