The current territory of Alaverdi was inhabited from the 3rd millennium BC. Historical sources are referred to as a place of fortress. Since ancient times copper extraction and processing has been carried out here. The copper industry has become very active in the 18th century when Greek miners came from Gyumushkhané and built the Alaverdi copper smelter plant. The plant was totally destroyed during the 1795 Agha Mahmed Khan's invasion. In 1887, the French occupied a dominant position in the Alaverdi copper industry, which installed new furnaces and furnaces and created small copper smelters. The city's economic development also contributed to the construction of the 1809 Tiflis-Alexandrapol railway.
The city is located in the Debed River Gorge, at an altitude of 770 meters above sea level.
