Medieval Yeghegis was one of the richest communities in Armenia. In 13-14 centuries it was the residence of the Orbelian family.
The St. Astvatsatsin chapel of the village was built in 1703. The ruins of the old church, and St. Karapet and Zorats churches are the 13th century structures. It is noteworthy that the oath and blessing ceremonies of the troops taking place at the Zorats Church were performed.
A Jewish cemetery dating back to the 13th century was discovered in the vicinity of the village.
In the 15th century, the city was destroyed by the torrent of Lenk Temur and other invasions, and then the earthquake destroyed the city. Later, the village was inhabited by Turkish-speaking people and called it Alayaz.
