Sustainable Energy Day in Martuni

On June 26 in Martuni, Gegharkunik marz was held Sustainable Energy Day. In the morning there was held a bike ride in which for about 20 children took part. Then there was held an awarding ceremony of the winners of bike ride. Then a painting contest of energy saving was held and the winners got presents from CoM East project.
Children from Martuni also represented the performance on energy saving issues.
Deputy Mayor of Martuni Hovsep Tonoyan stated the CoM East project will give the opportunity to the community to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 20%. He told that the project helps the municipality to prepare and implement Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans, reducing dependency on fossil fuels, improving the security of energy supply, and allowing them to contribute more actively to climate change mitigation.
Then cooperating with United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Armenia Renewable Resources and Energy Efficiency Fund (R2E2) energy efficiency educational workshop was held during which the main aims of the Project were represented and also the commitments and activities of the communities.
By the presentations of the experts of UNDP and R2E2 Fund the participants of the workshop got aquanted with street lighting systems and with the main approaches of using modern energy efficient technologies in the buildings and with the technologies of using renewable energy resources to produce energy.
The national expert Artem Kharazyan stated: “Signing of the Covenant of mayors is important for the community and also the organization of Energy days in communities has the aim to raise awareness of the citizens. For achieving the goals of Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan of the communities it is important to solve the problems of energy efficiency and it is important to implement measures to reduce energy consumption”.
EU-funded Covenant of Mayors East project supporting cities signing up to the Covenant of Mayors – a flagship EU initiative to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 30% by 2030. It helps municipalities to prepare and implement Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans, reducing dependency on fossil fuels, improving the security of energy supply, and allowing them to contribute more actively to climate change mitigation.
