On June 25 in Gegharkunik, in Gavar Sustainable Energy Day was held. The event was held during EU Sustainable energy week. During the event, held by EU-funded project Covenant of Mayors East (CoM East) and Gavar Municipality children's exhibition-competition entitled “Green Future” was held. The paitings of children from art school of the community were represented. The paintings were on energy issues. The winners of the contest got presents from Municipality and from the Project.

Then cooperating with United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Armenia Renewable Resources and Energy Efficiency Fund (R2E2) energy efficiency educational workshop was held during which the main aims of the Project were represented and also the commitments and activities of the communities.

By the presentations of the experts of UNDP and R2E2 Fund the participants of the workshop got aquanted with street lighting systems and with the main approaches of using modern energy efficient technologies in the buildings and with the technologies of using renewable energy resources to produce energy.

The deputy mayor of Gavar Grigor Boshyan stated that signing of the Covenant of mayors is important for the community and also the organization of energy days in communities has the aim to raise awareness of the citizens.

The coordinator of EU projects of Gavar municipality Varsenik Khachatryan represented when the community signed the covenant and what kind of projects were implemented. She stated: “For achieving the goals of Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan of the community it is important to solve the problems of energy efficiency and it is important to implement measures to reduce energy consumption”.

EU-funded Covenant of Mayors East project supporting cities signing up to the Covenant of Mayors – a flagship EU initiative to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 30% by 2030. It helps municipalities to prepare and implement Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans, reducing dependency on fossil fuels, improving the security of energy supply, and allowing them to contribute more actively to climate change mitigation.
