The Jermuk community was formed as a result of the change in the RA Law "On Administrative and Territorial Division of the Republic of Armenia" as of June 17, 2016, from Jermuk town and Gndevaz, Karkrashen, Kechut, Herher rural communities of Vayots Dzor.

According to Article 84 (Transitional Provisions) of the RA Law on Local Self-Government, the elections of the local self-governing bodies (community head and councilor) were held on October 2, 2016.

From October 8, 2016, the powers of the new local self-government bodies have entered into force.

 

Jermuk bracing mineral waters have long been used by ordinary people as well as Syunik princes to treat various diseases. This is evidenced by the remains of a pool built in the Middle Ages that were rebuilt and restored in the 1860s by police chief Gevorg Khanagyan and now the people also use the name of "Pristavi Gehol" when talking about the pool. Despite the historic rich past, the foundation of today's new city was laid only in 1940, after the construction of the first resort. In the years that followed, Jermuk was built and constructed, and all the opportunities for active recreation, health rehabilitation and tourism were created. In 1967, the city acquired a status of a republican significance, and in 1970 - the status of a community-based health resort. In the 1980s, the city had a population of about 10,000 people, about 2000 beds and a hostel network, with all infrastructure and services for active recreation and treatment. For active reasons, the active life of the resort town has been exhausted since the 1990s, which began to flourish over the last decade.
